Whether you choose to see a shrink or succumb to drug, alcohol or any kind of addiction, it is all the same. They’re all just different forms of escapism.
No matter what you give into, at the end of the day you are the only person who can help you self.
You will have to fight your own battles.

Hmm…very poignant. And true. It’s probably easier though if you have a good support network to help you.

How would it be easier if you had a good support system?

No, not necessarily escapism.
I presume you are referring to depression.
There are different mental states
where one’s mind can get helplessly trapped.
Some can get out of it by themselves, some don’t.
They need help, professionals, or just understanding people around them.
I presume earthPal refers to them.

I still think it is a form of escapism.
If one needs medication of some sort that’s a different story altogether. But otherwise you are the only person that can help yourself.
At the end of the what a professional shrink does is just listen. A shrink can’t make you feel any better unless you want to. A shrink can’t tell you what to do and what not to. The only thing they can do is listen while you sort out and figure out things for yourself.
The way I see things you can add the ‘good support system’ also to the list I mentioned, shrinks drugs and alcohol. The more you reply on them to help you through your problems the more dependent you become on them.

Sorry I may have completely misunderstood your post.
By a shrink do you mean a psychiatrist or a psycho-analyst?
Which situations are you referring to as ‘escapism’?

I think the very fact that you think other people/things can help you with your problems is a form of escapism….escaping from the real issue in hand….

Not always.
But it seems you are firm in your belief.
Maybe someday you might feel different about it.

Very nicely put. I concur entirely. You are your worst critic, and your own savoir.
